The visitor's guide to VAT refunds on luxury watches in Dubai

Yes — visitors to the UAE can reclaim most of the 5% VAT on a watch bought in Dubai. The refund is processed electronically at the airport before you fly home, and on a serious timepiece it is not a small courtesy: it routinely covers the cost of the flight. Here is how the scheme works in practice, and the small mistakes that cost travellers their refund.

Who qualifies?

The scheme is for overseas visitors: you must not be a UAE resident, and the watch must leave the country with you. GCC residents should check the current rules for their specific situation, as treatment has evolved — we are happy to confirm the position on the day of purchase.

How the refund works, step by step

  • Buy from a registered merchant. The retailer must be enrolled in the official tourist-refund scheme and will tag the purchase digitally against your passport at the till. Ask before you pay — not every shop participates. Maison Swiss processes this as a matter of course.
  • Keep the watch with you. The refund requires the goods to be exportable and, if requested, presentable at validation. Wear it or carry it in hand luggage — do not bury it in checked baggage before validating.
  • Validate at the airport before departure. At Dubai International the validation points are clearly signposted; the process is electronic and usually takes minutes. Allow a little extra time on busy evenings.
  • Choose how to receive the money. Refund to card is the usual choice; cash is available with limits.

How much comes back?

At the time of writing, the scheme returns the large majority of the 5% VAT after the operator's processing fee — think of it as roughly 4% of the purchase price finding its way back to you. On a watch at AED 150,000, that is a meaningful sum. We state the exact figure for your purchase on the day, so there are no surprises at the airport.

The mistakes that cost travellers their refund

  • Leaving validation until final boarding call — the desk cannot help once the gate closes.
  • Departing later than the scheme's export window allows. Buy with your travel dates in mind; the window is generous, but it exists.
  • Assuming every merchant participates. The tag must be created at purchase — it cannot be added retroactively next week.
  • Posting the watch home instead of carrying it. The scheme covers goods you export personally.

Does this make Dubai cheaper than home?

Frequently, yes — the arithmetic is covered honestly in our companion guide, Is it cheaper to buy a Rolex in Dubai? The short version: 5% VAT (mostly refundable to visitors) against roughly 20% in much of Europe, plus one of the deepest secondary markets in the world. Compare full set to full set and year to year, and Dubai is very hard to beat.
